Finding a Job: Interviewing in a Second Language

By ELAM.ca

All interviews require preparation, but interviews in a second language are even more of a challenge and require more preparation and practice.

The more you practice, the more comfortable you will feel, and the better you will perform.

Part 1: Preparing for the Interview

Discuss with your coach what information you need to prepare:

  • Information about the company
  • Your synopsis about you…your unique selling proposition (USP)
  • Typical interview questions: your accomplishments, strengths, weaknesses, expectations
  • Key professional and interview vocabulary
  • Answers to difficult questions
  • Tips for telephone interviews
  • Questions you ask at the interview

Part 2: (One week later) Practicing Your Answers

  • Review your prepared answers with the coach
  • Role play answers to questions
  • Practice incorporating prepared answers into any question
  • Make necessary adjustments

Part 3: Just before the Interview

Role-play an actual interview with a friend or coach.
